Husqvarna History

320 YEARS: And Aiming At The Future

The standard of excellence at Husqvarna is based on a tradition that dates back to 1689. Swedish King Charles XI ordered the construction of a factory on the banks of the Husqvarna River, in Jönköping, Sweden to produce muskets.Water power was harnessed from the Huskvarna River to create the water-powered plant. The name Huskvarna was derived from "house mill", "hus" meaning house and "kvarn" meaning mill. The word itself can be traced back at least to the year 1529.

The first Husqvarna sewing machine, the North Star, appeared in 1872. The now defunct Husqvarna Foundry (1874-1972) turned out a variety of products extending from wood-burning kitchen ranges to modern household appliances such as meat mincing and corn grinding machines.

Husqvarna was Sweden's first large bicycle manufacturer during 1896-1962 and in 1952, began producing the first mopeds in Sweden. This progression led to the development of motorcycles around 1903, with the first model introduced in 1914. Husqvarna motorcycles continued in the tradition of superior quality and value, winning countless races and awards. During the 1950's, engine building at Husqvarna was not only used in making road and track motorcycles and mopeds. In 1956, the first motor mowers appeared, followed by chain saws and outboard motors.

Husqvarna's first chain saw, the model 90, was introduced in 1959, and thus Husqvarna's legendary chain saw history began. In 1969, Husqvarna unveiled the model 180, the first chain saw in the world with a totally integrated vibration-dampening system.

Today, Husqvarna continues to lead the industry with product features and benefits such as Air Injection, LowVib™, Smart Start™, E-tech™ and more on an expansive line of forestry and lawn & garden products.
